Over The Last 70 Years
Industrial agriculture has replaced a majority of self-sustaining, medium sized family farms in the United States. Industrial agriculture is a form of farming that is mechanized, concentrated, and bolstered by the use of pesticides, fertilizer, and antibiotics.
Following World War II
Concern was rising over feeding the growing population, particularly in developing countries struggling with poverty, hunger, and potential political unrest. The American government, scientists, and wealthy families like the Rockefellers launched what became known as the Green Revolution, an agricultural movement which ended up proving not to be so green. In fact, it led to the introduction and explosion of GMOs and pesticide use.
Green Revolution
The Green Revolution aimed to alleviate crippling food insecurity, malnutrition, and poverty. Unfortunately, it also launched an era of chemical-intensive, destructive agriculture practices.
